Improving the A47 – North Tuddenham to Easton dualling

Public consultation

Comments from Marlingford and Colton Parish Council

There are two ways in which the current A47 impacts on the village of Colton:

  1. 1. Prior to the construction of the Mattishall Road roundabout, Colton was subject to ‘rat-running’ on all seven days of the week, throughout the day, by eastbound traffic from the Mattishall direction that was heading for the Easton roundabout and, rather than attempting to turn right onto the A47 at the Mattishall Road junction, chose to divert through Colton. Since the construction of the Mattishall Road roundabout on the A47 this problem has been much reduced – please see the traffic data HERE

  2. When there is an accident on the A47, on the section to the west of the Easton roundabout, westbound traffic on the A47 tends to divert at the Easton roundabout and then travel through Colton on roads that are single track with passing places, with attendant chaos and damage to verges.

Preferences: the parish council’s preferences are for the options that would retain the Mattishall Road roundabout, and would provide an alternative route, other than through Colton, when there is an accident on either the existing route of the A47 or on the new dual carriageway.

Option 2 is the Council’s least favoured option, because of the seemingly inevitable loss of the Mattishall Road roundabout and the consequent uncertainty as to the effects of any alternative arrangements for the Mattishall Road traffic. Further, this option does not provide any alternative route, other than through Colton, if there is an accident to the west of the Easton roundabout/junction. The Council favours Options 1 and 4 with Option 3 being third.
